Divine Ikubor popularly known as Rema is an expedite growing artist in not only Nigeria but the global music industry.
He is a rapper, afro beat singer, songwriter and a model who is currently signed to Mavin records which is owned by Don Jazzy.
The rapper is surprising 18 years old and he is well gifted. In fact, some Nigerians are considering this young man as a National treasure.
Divine was born 1st may 2001 in Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria where he grew up into a Christian family and both his Primary and secondary school was completed in this state.
He was inspired to become an artist at 11, as he enjoyed rapping with friends at the Benin local churches.
After losing both his Father and Brother by the age of 15, Rema had to get a job on the side to help support his mother, but he still remained determined to make it in the music industry.
SoundCloud was an essential influence on Rema, as the streaming app introduced him to the rising underground internet rap scene. He also observed how rappers promoted themselves on social media and decided to give it a go.
In February 2018, Rema made a freestyle on one of D’Prince popular song “Gucci gang” which Rema posted on his Instagram page. This clip went so viral that it even got to D’Prince himself and it caught his attention.
It made D’Prince to make arrangements for the Benin city teenager to fly into Lagos to meet and record demo tapes. At this point, Rema had never recorded a demo but D’Prince’s brother and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy took a liking to Rema’s vocals.
This led to Don offering him a recording contract with the powerhouse label that, at the time, included talents like Reekado Banks and Tiwa Savage. The other members of the record label include Korede Bello, Di’ja, DNA Twins, Ladi Poe, Dj Big N, Baby Fresh, Ozedikus e.t.c.
After months of practice and prep in the studio, Don Jazzy was ready to reveal the new signee on March 22, 2019, with the release of “Iron Man.” The song features melodies inspired by Bollywood productions mixed with an unorthodox beat.
This track was a hit and is trending in Nigeria and the rest of the world till date. It was even on Barack Obama’s top 100 playlist.
On the perspective of Don Jazzy, “the model will expand the number of ways the Mavin records can support artists and entrepreneurship to grow together in Africa at home and internationally” he stated.
